Intern - Downstream Process Development

Requisition ID:  7623
Location:

Bothell, WA, US

Do you want to join a team where the mission is meaningful, the challenges are complex, and you can directly see the results of your hard work? Lundbeck Seattle BioPharmaceuticals (Lu-SBP), located in Bothell, Washington, is the Process Development Center of Excellence for Biologics within the global Lundbeck CMC organization. Since integrating into Lundbeck in October 2019, Lu-SBP has supported commercial launch of Lundbeck’s first biologic product (Vyepti) and advancement of a growing biologics pipeline in collaboration with our Copenhagen-based Process Science & Validation Team. The Lu-SBP team leads and supports the development of new product candidates from cell line development through commercial validation of Drug Substance and Drug Product manufacturing processes. Join us on our journey to advance brain health and transform lives.

SUMMARY

The Downstream Process Development Student Intern will support a team of scientists working to develop and improve scalable purification processes for therapeutic biologics in preclinical and clinical development. The intern will gain hands-on experience with downstream unit operations and contribute to process improvement efforts aimed at enhancing robustness, manufacturability, and overall process performance.

Project activities may include supporting studies related to polishing chromatography (e.g., ion exchange or hydrophobic interaction chromatography), viral filtration performance, and ultrafiltration/diafiltration operations. Through experimental execution and data analysis, the intern will assist in evaluating process conditions, identifying opportunities for optimization, and contributing to ongoing efforts to strengthen downstream process understanding. This role is highly collaborative and involves interaction with teams in upstream processing, analytical development, and formulation development to support integrated process development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 • Assist with chromatography, harvest, and formulation (UF/DF) operations, with exposure to defining and refining UF/DF operating design spaces (TMP, flux, loading density) to support scalable manufacturing
 • Support downstream group with equipment maintenance, buffer preparation, and inventory organization
 • Assist in the design and execution of purification screening, scouting, characterization, and viral filtration troubleshooting experiments, including structured root cause analysis
 • Support purification of biologic protein lots from micro-scale to pilot-scale to enable upstream and downstream studies
 • Utilize data analysis, visualization tools, and internal AI-enabled resources to evaluate process trends, interrogate historical datasets, and support data-driven decision-making
 • Participate in continuous process improvement initiatives focused on process robustness, operational efficiency, and manufacturing readiness
 • Present information and actively participate in discussions on laboratory practices, experimental execution, and results
 • Communicate and collaborate with team members and cross-functional partners
 • Perform downstream laboratory tasks following operating procedures and general laboratory safety guidelines (biohazardous and hazardous materials are used in the laboratory)
 • Correctly document work performed; analyze and communicate results clearly
 • Assist with laboratory organization, inventory management, equipment procurement, and maintenance of lab supplies

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
 • Enrolled toward a BS or equivalent degree in the sciences.
 • Completed introductory Biology and/or Chemistry coursework
 • Some laboratory experience or basic understanding of laboratory principles and techniques
 • Strong communication and collaboration skills
 • Attention to detail
 • Enthusiastic attitude and willingness to learn

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
 • Practical experience in a laboratory environment
 • Experience purifying proteins using column chromatography
 • Practical chemistry knowledge including buffer chemistry
 • Familiarity with principles of chromatography and filtration
 • Exposure to statistical or data analysis software (e.g., JMP)
 • Interest in application of digital or AI-based tools to scientific data analysis

Travel:
 • Willingness/Ability to travel up to 2% domestically

The range displayed is specifically for those potential hires who will work or reside in the state of Washington, if selected for this role, and may vary based on various factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
