We are currently looking for a Senior Payroll Accountant to join the Lundbeck Finance team. This position is permanent full-time in the Montreal Head-Office. The employee will report to the Accounting Payroll Manager.



Senior Payroll Accountant


Your Position:

The Senior Payroll Accountant is a key member of the North America Accounting team. The Senior Payroll Accountant is responsible for payroll processing, accounting, non purchase order and payment of taxes. He reports to the Payroll Manager in the US.


Payroll Processing and Tax Reporting (35%)

  • Process bi-weekly payroll for timely and accurate employee pay in compliance with all relevant corporate policies and statutory requirements including any special payroll treatment for ex-pats
  • Maintain employee files and master data records with up to date information; coordinate all changes/approvals with appropriate parties (e.g. pension plans, group insurance, cost centers, managers, etc.); supporting documentation for future reference resulting from auditor request and/or discrepancies.
  • Respond in a timely manner to employee questions or concerns regarding inquiries related to payroll; provide expertise and recommendations as needed on earnings, benefit, vacation, and tax calculations/adjustments.
  • Calculate and verify bonus and merit increases including retro amounts.
  • Calculate benefits deductions and vacation payouts; establish earnings/deductions codes in payroll systems for tracking/reporting purposes.
  • Insure systems configuration is correctly set up to controls over accuracy and consistent applications to minimize risk of error for any over/under payments or reporting.
  • Determine appropriate tax treatment for fringe benefits
  • Remit withholdings to government agencies, pension, or other benefit providers on time and accurately according to required deadlines.
  • Manage all quarterly and year end fiscal processes related to payroll including but not limited to true-ups of taxable fringe benefits, issuing T4s, Relevé 1 reporting, and worker compensation.
  • Coordinate communications to employees on changes, new treatments, or increased reporting requirements to insure a smooth transition and minimal employee disruption.
  • Provide back up support to the US payroll team as necessary to maintain competency and provide adequate risk coverage.


Payroll Accounting, Audit and Compliance (25%)

  • Prepare and book all journal entries for payroll registers into SAP general ledger.
  • Prepare accruals, reconciliations, analytical commentary for payroll liabilities/provisions; maintain supporting documentation for auditors; work papers should be in auditor and executive ready formats with easy-to-understand content and traceability back to the general ledger.   Work papers should include control checks to maintain high level of accuracy; assumptions/analyses should provide insight into whether balances are appropriate to avoid any unanticipated, material adjustments.
  • Provide assistance for quarterly forecasting and annual budget of wages/benefits per Corporate guidelines.
  • Stay abreast of statutory and/or financial reporting changes to implement new processes/approvals as required.  Attend training as appropriate
  • Respond to inquiries from cost center managers regarding any payroll entries to their cost centers.


General Accounting (35%)

  • SAP Maintenance
    •         Creatin of new bank accounts for new hires when needed
    •         Assist GBS in Krakw with new vendor set-ups
  • Validate and provide GL coding for Fleet Invoices
  • Validate and provide GL coding for mobile phone invoices including collection of company reimbursement for personal use outside of policy.
  • Analyze Non-PO invoices (e.g. HCP payments) for GL coding, contract specifications for amounts are in sync with request for payment, verify appropriate approvals.
  • Payment and reporting of non-resident withholding tax related to vendor spending
  • Respond to all requests to Statistics Canada to meet due dates with accurate reporting
  • Deposit all customer and non-customer checks within 5 business days and provide back-up documentation for Feban postings
  • Assist employees and GBS for questions related to vendors, CPS and/or IM system issues.

  • Invest time and energy into professional development while maintaining competencies.


Position Qualifications:

  • Degree in business administration, in Accounting or equivalent
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a similar role with responsibilities in payroll cycle, taxable benefits and payroll reports
  • Proficiency with payroll systems and software for data report creation
  • Proficiency in MS with advances excel skills
  • Knowledge of SAP and Ceridian Dayforce HCM is required
  • Proficient knowledge of accounting basics (i.e. budget, journal entry, headcount and month-end processes)
  • Bilingual French – English, oral and written
